"When we are crushed like grapes,
we cannot think of the wine we will become."
Jennifer has over 15 years experience in higher education, most of which has been spent in academic advising of college students, as well as teaching Student Life Skills courses. These courses are designed to help students discover their strengths, values, and interests so they can select a college major and eventually pursue the career of their dreams. Jennifer's experience transfers directly to the supervision process. She is supercharged about helping people find their specialty in social work practice and be the expert "go-to" person in that area. Jennifer considers social work education and supervision to be one of her primary specialties. For information on her other primary practice areas, please click here.
Five weeks before graduating with my MSW, my Micro Social Work professor pulled me aside and told me, "You'll never make it as a therapist." Not long after receiving my degree, I took her words to heart and left the profession.
Part of it was due to the insecurity I felt after having a professor say that to me, but part of it was due to my difficulty finding an internship. I was grossly uneducated about Florida laws and I misunderstood how liberal Florida is with its licensure requirements (compared to my home state of New York). It just seemed easier to give up.
Ten years later, I managed to get back on track. But I wonder, what would have happened if I found a supervisor who could have set me straight early on? What if I had a mentor who actually wanted to invest in my professional development, instead of keeping me down? If only someone had told me -- if only I had known how ridiculously easy it is to get my Florida license, I could have started my career a decade earlier!
If you are someone who is freaking out or suffering from impostor syndrome, let me assure you, YOU CAN DO THIS. If you are sick and tired of proving yourself to the powers that be, let me help you work through the red tape that you've encountered before. Whether you are trying to get licensed or you're already an LCSW who needs help starting a private practice, let me offer you an opportunity to learn from my mistakes, come alongside you, and be the cheerleader to you that I never had.
Feel free to browse through this site and if you feel so inclined, contact me to learn more about how we can work together to help you accomplish your goals.
